Lady Captain's Report
Wednesday 5th February 2020
On 13th December at our Ladies’ Presentation Evening Matt & Tiff did us proud with our lovely three course meal. Stewart & Marejke served our food with style & even took photos of us all. 19 ladies booked but, unfortunately Sue Baldwin was poorly & we had a reindeer attend instead of Penny Marchant! ???? It was lovely to see so many ladies out having a good time together. It was especially nice to welcome the new ladies & ladies who came to support the prize winners; hopefully they will be amongst the prize winners next year. I would like to thank Gail Pinner for spontaneously taking photos of the competition winners.
Our last Mixed Winter Fun before Christmas on 14th December saw 19 golfers competing; the format was an Individual Stableford, full handicap with a 4Ball Blind Draw. Ian Wilson was the lucky player who was drawn out twice, resulting in one of his teams coming 2nd.
1st - Tim Ball, Brian Pinner, Jane Clee & Di Owen
2nd - Nick Clee, Ian Wilson, Ade Barrie & Tine Sylvester
3rd - Alan Barton, Jim Sylvester, Steve Owen & Jenny Andrews
I haven’t played since 14th December......it’s raining, it’s pouring & our golf course is suffering but, the ‘Course Closed’ signs are out in force across ‘sunny England!’ ???????????? Our brilliant team of experienced green keepers have faced many challenges over the last few months & continue to do so. They can’t stop it raining, but they have taken the necessary steps to protect our gem of a course. Winter mats on the fairway certainly challenges the norm but are an effective way of protecting our course and keeping the course open when it would otherwise have been closed.
The weather impacts many parts of Wharton Park’s business, from visitor green fees to society bookings and food & beverage sales to members & non members alike. The decision to close the course at various times despite all the interventions put in place isn’t taken lightly but due to the adverse weather conditions we’ve encountered has on occasion been necessary. The green keepers work tirelessly to deliver the best standards they can at all times.
