Summer is finally here, and there’s never been a better time to get out onto the course and enjoy the sunshine!
It’s been a busy few weeks at the club, as June got underway with some fantastic celebrations for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
Try your luck in our new golf photo competition by sending us your favourite golf photo taken at the club this summer! We’ve got some fantastic BMW PGA weekend tickets up for grabs. Find out more below.
The Wharton Cup
After an exciting two days on the course with the weather holding out for all involved, we would like to congratulate Owen Carruthers and Lynne Beaumont for taking the victory in their prospective categories in the Wharton Park Cup. With both being in contention after the first day scores, both winners came out fighting to hold onto their winning position.
- Owen Carruthers won with a fantastic total score of 135 (-7)
- Best gross score for the two rounds - Wayne Boden
- Lynne Beaumont - 146+2
- Best Overall Gross - Selina Williams
The course was in superb condition with the greens running true. A massive thank you to Gavin and his team for all their hard work preparing the course.
Progress on the Strike Shack is coming on leaps and bounds. The interactive driving range is now branded and fully functional with the F&B portion almost ready to go. Come and try your luck with one of the fun game modes or competitions, tracking your every swing with Toptracer technology.
All the tees have been regularly cut, and we’ve been hand cutting those that seem to get more wear on them. These tees were also given a granular feed to aid growth and appear to be looking better for it.
We had been block cutting the fairways, but recently changed that and brushed them in the opposite direction to raise the grass. We are now cutting them diagonally, alternating in the direction of cut to form a diamond pattern.
We have verti cut the greens three times in June to date and have dropped our cut down, which along with rolling with vibrating rollers has added speed to the greens and we now have them rolling very nicely. The greens have also had a granular feed and a liquid feed throughout June.
We started June with a full greens staff but recently lost two members to do other jobs, one of them being our apprentice. We have replaced one of the positions but are currently still on the lookout for a replacement apprentice.
I hope that you are starting to see the benefits of our work now with the course in its current condition, in particular the 15th green which we kept closed a little longer but hope you now acknowledge the benefits of having done so.
Buggies are now allowed off the buggy paths, but can I please request that you keep them away from the tees, greens and surrounds.
I have noticed several golfers failing to rake the bunkers after they have played out of them. We kindly ask that you leave a bunker as you would expect to find it, for the benefit of everyone using the course. Thank you for your cooperation.
Gavin Heath, Course Manager
All knockout competitions are in full flow, with some very competitive match ups arising so far. An honourable mention to Captain Marc Suffolk and Josh Webb for a brilliant match against Head Chef Matt and Al Prosser, taking them up the first hole but unfortunately coming up short. Smiling faces at the start of the match pictured below.
