Your Golf Club Update - May

Monday 9th May 2022

It feels as if spring has truly arrived now, with sunny days and warmer temperatures!

It’s so nice to see the club buzzing with energy and more members getting back out onto the course. We’re looking forward to a summer full of golfing events, so why not book into a competition and put your skills to the test?

We wish all golfers luck for a successful season. We also hope you are all very excited for our new Strike Shack range to be completed! This development will be huge for Wharton Park as a golfing facility and will take our offering to a whole new level for members and visitors alike.

The Robert Rock tour rolled round on its annual visit to Wharton Park. After a fantastic event we would like to congratulate junior member Nicholas Campbell on winning his age group, putting in a fantastic performance and doing our club proud.

We would like to introduce new starter Elise, our new Events Sales Executive. She has a plethora of experience with the Severn Valley Railway building her way up through the ranks over 20 years, organising many different events from weddings to Halloween spectaculars. She will make a wonderful addition to the team and we wish her well in her new role.

Don’t forget to keep an eye on our website and social media channels to stay updated about all the social events we have planned over the next few months.

Course Report

It’s been a busy first month for me as Course Manager. We’ve had one full time and one casual member of staff join the team, with another full time member to start in the next two weeks, putting us at a good number for the season.

We completed the greens renovation where we verti drained all the greens then dressed them to maintain the surface and aid with drainage.

The 15th green was left off a little longer to give it some extra recovery time which allowed us to move bad patches around the green to make a better surface. This then enabled us to open the green for the Easter weekend. We managed to get cuts on all areas of the course which I hope you agree makes the course visually impressive at the moment.

Going forward, we will look to verti cut the greens and start rolling them now and again to improve speed and roll on the greens. Also half of the bunkers have been flymowed, edged and weeded and we look to complete the rest of them in the coming weeks.

Lady Captain’s Update

The ladies have continued to play Stablefords through the winter months and congratulations must go to all the winners, plus a well done to all ladies who have taken part.

In March the ladies played in a fun Texas Egg Scramble, but the weather was awful! We were all thoroughly soaked but bravely finished the competition! Despite the weather, it was a great success and more similar competitions are planned.

The first Droitwich inter-club league match took place on 1st April at Sapey - a great win for Wharton Park was hard fought for, winning 3 and 2. Well done to all ladies who played. Next match is home v Moseley. Good luck to all in the team.

The first Stableford and Medal of the summer season have taken place - speaking for myself, I have missed my mat, especially out of the rough!

The ladies have a busy schedule of Stablefords, Medals, DICL matches, friendly matches plus trophy competitions and fun ones too. We had a fun competition in the form of a Waltz from the blue tees in April - a change from playing off the red tees! Also in April was the first of the Ladies’ team trophy competitions, The Spring Bowl. Good luck to all the ladies playing in any competition in the coming months. Enjoy yourselves and let’s hope for some great weather.

Men’s Captain's Update

The season is officially starting, and it's great to be back at the club on a regular basis and seeing the course get fuller and fuller.

As we continue to grow our membership I would like to welcome our new members and invite any of you to get in touch with me with any questions or issues, or even just to have a friendly round to introduce ourselves.

On behalf of us all I would like to thank our new Course Manager Gav for his and his team’s hard work getting the course up to a fantastic level, in particular the work that has been put in to reopen the 15th. Let's all do our part in keeping our course to the standard we all like to see by following Gav’s requests: replace divots properly, using the bags now available at the first tee. Rake bunkers after yourselves, and repair pitch marks on the greens, leaving the course in as good a condition (if not better) than how you found it.

With the improvements taking place all around us at the club at the moment, such as the Strike Shack range, the new area by the first tee and our stunning new balcony and menu, we should all be very proud to be part of this club and can all play a part in cementing ourselves as the best club in the area.
